4to (233x173 mm). Folding title page engraved by Martinus Hailler after Johann Georg Wagner, [8], 204 pp. Collation: )(4 A-Z4 Aa-Bb4 Cc2. Large engraved vignette on typographic title page and 100 large engraved emblems in text. Contemporary stiff vellum, sprinkled edges. On the pastedown bookplate of Irwin Laughlin, on the first front flyleaf verso manuscript note “1538 ultimo Gennaio Rogato Moffa”. Tear repaired to the folding leaf, damp stain to the lower margin of the first leaves, slightly uniformly browned, but a good, genuine copy.

 

First edition. Prefaced and commented by the historian Paul Hachenberg (1652-1681), this emblem collection is actually by Charles II, Elector of the Palatinate from 1680 to 1685, disguised under the pseudonym of Philotheus.
