Contemporary stiff vellum with manuscript title on spine (rubbed, lacking lower portion of the spine). Wormholes on the margin of some leaves not affecting the text, some light scattered spotting and browning, pp. 721-912 heavily browned, all in all a good genuine copy.

First Frankfurt edition (first appeared at Paris in 1608 with the title Institutionum pharmaceuticarum). Jean de Renou was the chief physician to three kings of France (Henri II, Henri III and Henri IV). His pharmaceutical dispensary was a great success and was reissued many times in the first half of the seventeenth century. Louis de Serres translated it into French (1624). “He overturned a multitude of popular errors about the virtues of plants and minerals, though he himself was not devoid of some erroneous notions” (Ferguson).
